More Expensive- but even better

The Single Camera Programme Making Course - starting in January is now going to cost £200 - rather than the £110 originally estimated.

This is so we can provide technician support and also so that we can hire professional quality cameras for the 'shoots'.

'Nerve Gas' to be broadcast!

One of the highlights of last year's Media Film Festival at Filton was 'Nerve-Gas' a Comedy Drama written and directed by John Barker. John is known (as the disfunctional regional news presenter) to anyone who saw the BBC award winnning 'Bickley News', and as an aspiring stand-up comedian, he can come up with some gems of comic timing.

The original 'Nerve Gas' was 25 minutes long and filmed in a slow 'French New Wave' style- but it 'grew on you', like the best comedy does.

An edited version of the film is now going to be broadcast on BBC2 as part of the 'Blast' series, a late night strand featuring new talen
t.

The Filton Media department must declare a personal interest in this, many of the characters in the programme, particularly the horrendous self deluded egomaniac media lecturer 'Rick Lawlan', are based on the thinly veiled worst features of Media and Art lecturers! Nerve Gas also features cameos from several teachers- including myself!

John has now extended the TV pilot programme into a radio series, which is currently being recorded for broadcast on UWE's 'Hub Radio' (www.thehub1449.com)

The awful Rick Lawlan is to be played by one Adam Ranson- who dimly suspects he is being set up! Actually- like all the best comic monsters, from Hancock to Brent- Lawlan is an exploration of dashed dreams and aspirations - and as such is universal rather than merely local.

Brief Encounters

We're all off to the Watershed on Friday for the 'Brief Encounters' Short film festival.

www.brief-encounters.org.uk has the details- an excellent way to get a grasp of film narrative techniques.

Another new media evening course starting in January

Digital Photography

ABC Level 3 Award in Digital Photo-Imaging

20 week course starting Monday January 10th 2005 (In S6)

The course shows you how to use a range of digital cameras in order to create effective photographic images. You also be shown how to digitally manipulate images using the creative potential of the powerful software package ‘Adobe PhotoShop’.

At the end of the course you'll have a portfolio of work in both print and digital form.

The course uses ‘Macintosh’ computers and a full range of hardware, including; Colour Laser printers and Film Scanners.

A good course for people who want to be creative with their new cameras- or for people who want to build a portfolio for University entry.
