On Friday went down to the AQA Media Studies Paper 1 Standardisation meeting in London. After marking a few dozen of these trends begin to appear- Chief of these is that it is very easy to THINK YOU'VE MADE A POINT- when in actual fact all you've done is given a description of the text. The basic rule is -point out some important feature- then immediately explain how this can be related to a key concept or media term. The best students look at the texts as a whole rather than mechanically trot through the key concepts- or worse- describe the rext from start to finish.

The best answers aren't the ones that show lots of media terms revision - they are the ones that use the text to get into interesting questions about the text and the media and show 'critical autonomy'.

Friday 16 January sees the second BBC workshop (10.00-1.00 pm). This time the theme is Research, this includes compliance issues, such as how to work within the BBC Producer's guidelines.

Only a few weeks to go before we head off to BERLIN for the Film Festival. Last year was the first time that we went- this year we should be able to find our way round a little better. Hopefully this year we'll be able to take in more of the Film Festival itself- Berlin is the last major festival before the Oscars and so often has some high calibre Hollywood talent.
